Less than 20 percent of nursing homes in major cities of China are profitable, and housing for middle-income seniors are far from what is necessary, according to a report released Thursday by the China Center for Research on aging.

The report, which focused on the development of nursing homes, was based on information collected last year by the civil affairs authorities and questionnaires from 257 nursing homes in 12 major cities, including Tianjin and Chongqing .

5.5 nursing homes in China 

The number of beds offered by different types of nursing homes in China exceeded 5.5 million at the end of last year. That 26 beds per 1000 people aged 60 or more, according to the report.
China's elderly population, usually defined as those above 60 years, has grown rapidly in recent years.

More government subsidies are needed to encourage the development of nursing homes, said Kong Wei, an official with the China National Committee on Aging.
Among the nursing homes surveyed, 19.4 percent said their company made a profit. About a third said they had lost money, while nearly half said their books were balanced.
"In general, we need more investment in nursing homes to see gains, and profit margins in the industry are lower than for many other industries," said the report.

Most nursing homes in China are either food and living necessities as basic, and lacking medical or entertainment facilities or those expensive premium that are well equipped and offer a high level of service offering low-end.
Many nursing homes built in recent years are for the high-end market, because they charge more to recoup their investment sooner and generate profits more quickly, said GongPeng.
"These nursing homes are beyond the financial capacity of most older people," she said.
